Ph.D. student receives scholarship
Ms. Kamalika Das, Ph.D. student in Computer Science, has received the Grace Hopper Scholarship for Women in Computing.
COE&IT students develop games, start gaming company at UMBC techcenter
Paul Oliver (CMSC) and Arthur Gould (ME) have started Legendary Studios, a game-development company that builds creative, nonviolent games. They have received support from UMBC CMSC alumnus Eric Conn '85 and have partnered with Microsoft to launch their business, which is housed at the UMBC techcenter. Information Systems Student Named America East Conference Scholar-Athlete in Women's Tennis
Rising senior Cornelia Carapcea (IS) is one of nine student-athletes selected by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA as America East Conference Scholar-Athletes for 2007-08 academic year. Computer Science and UMBC to Lead Six Campus-Team to Turn 9-11 Commission Intel-Sharing Reforms into Technology System
UMBC is one of 64 universities that has received $200 million in research funding from the U.S. Department of Defense. Professor Timothy Finin (CSEE) is principal investigator of the multi-university team that was awarded a five-year, $7.5 million Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program. "A Framework for Managing the Assured Information Sharing Lifecycle" includes Purdue University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Texas at Dallas, and University of Texas at San Antonio. The UMBC team also includes UMBC CSEE professors Anupam Joshi, Yelena Yesha, Hillol Karupta, and Alan Sherman. More information about this award can be found here and here and here. UMBC Valedictorian
Simon Gray (Bachelor of Science, Chemical & Biochemical Engineering), has been selected as UMBC's 2008 Valedictorian. Simon has received an extremely competitive and prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship. He is one of three UMBC students to receive this award. Simon will attend the University of Cambridge this fall to complete advanced studies in Chemical Engineering and Business Management. Upon completion of the program at Cambridge Simon will pursue his M.D./Ph.D., and aspires to be a physician/scientist. Click here for more information. [updated July 28, 2008]
Outstanding Alumni of the Year
Stephanie Reel ('85 Information Systems) was honored as "2008 Outstanding Alumni of the Year." The Award ceremony and reception was held in Annapolis in February, and honored Ms. Reel and five other UMBC alumni. [updated May 29, 2008]

Two COE&IT Faculty elected to AIMBE members (February 2008)
The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) announced the election of 82 new members of the College of Fellows. Two members of the College of Engineering and Information Technology were elected, including Dr. Tulay Adali (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering) and Dr. Julia Ross (Chemical and Biochemical Engineering). The newly elected Fellows were nominated and approved by current Fellows of the AIMBE College, which consists of over 900 engineers and scientists.
Recipients of this honor are recognized for their outstanding achievements in medical and biological engineering. A formal induction ceremony was held during the Institute’s 17th Annual Event in Washington, D.C. on February 21, 2008.

The American Society for Engineering Education has chosen Professor Julia Ross (Chair, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering) to receive the 2007 ASEE Sharon Keillor Award for Women in Engineering Education. The Award will be presented at the Annual Awards Banquet on Wednesday evening, June 27th in Honolulu, Hawaii. Read more...
